| | Let me be clear: I do not have internet at home. I do not have tv access at home. Even if I did, I do not have time to sit and watch things right now. I do not watch many movies and I do not follow the "news".
Yes, I put "news" in air quotes.
I get so tired of people berating me for not paying attention to it. They either dismiss me and say "ignorance is bliss" or attack me and tell me I need to watch it.
HELLO PEOPLE OF EARTH.
The "news" is just as much entertainment as a movie, a tv show, or a modern "novel". It is the same--images designed to distract you from the people around you and direct your pocket book towards their cause. It is just that. If you watch it to be entertained, well, happy for you to have that kind of time. If you watch it thinking you're learning something, you are ridiculous and deceived.
I care about what goes on around me--it's just that I choose to care about the people and things I can influence. I can do nothing about some tipped over cruise ship in Italy, but I can show compassion to the people around me. I cannot fix whichever nation is committing the most atrocities in Africa right now, but I can take care of my own, be that family or friends.
As far as I (and C.S. Lewis) is concerned, emotional energy expended on things I have no control over is just emotional energy wasted that could have been spent on those around me. |
